Blondes may have more fun, but red hair commands attention. If you're ready to make the switch from sunny blonde to fiery redhead, think twice before picking up a box of dye. Going red at home can save you some serious coin over a salon visit, but it's not the best option for everyone. Deep dramatic red hues are best left to a professional -- botched home color jobs can be pricey to correct. Here's the scoop on the best way to get a radiant red mane.
1.
Consider your current shade of blonde. If you're a platinum hue and hoping to go deep mahogany, head to a professional -- single process dyes (the kind you buy in a boxed kit) aren't powerful enough to make a change that drastic. Stay within two shades of your current color if you're dyeing at home.
2.
Prepare your hair. Red color molecules are small -- if your hair is in poor condition, the color may not take well. Get a trim prior to coloring if you have split ends and use a deep conditioning treatment the day before you dye. Skip shampooing the day you plan to color.
3.
Do a strand test first. Mix a tablespoon or so of the dye according to the directions, then apply it to a few strands of your hair. (Be sure to do this in an inconspicuous spot.) Allow it to develop according to the directions, then wipe off with a damp paper towel. If you're happy with the results, it's safe to do a full head application.
4.
Go red. Mix up the rest of the dye accordingly. Wear an old button down shirt and plastic gloves to protect your skin. Start applying the dye along your hairline and root areas, then work it through the rest of your hair using your fingers. When you're sure your strands are coated, pile your hair on top of your head and allow the color to develop according to the package directions.
5.
Rinse all the dye form your hair with lukewarm water. Skip the shampoo and apply the included after color conditioner. Rinse and style as usual.
